Military working dogs have a storied history that spans centuries. During World War I, they served as messengers, carrying vital information across battlefields. In World War II, they took on roles as scouts, guards, and search-and-rescue dogs. Today, their responsibilities have expanded to include detecting narcotics and explosives, patrolling borders, and even participating in high-stakes missions like the raid that led to the capture of Osama bin Laden.
One of the most famous military dogs is Sgt. Stubby, a World War I hero who saved countless lives by warning soldiers of incoming gas attacks and locating wounded comrades. Another notable canine is Cairo, a Navy SEAL dog who played a crucial role in the mission to eliminate Osama bin Laden.
National K-9 Veterans Day is celebrated in various ways across the United States. Public ceremonies and parades are held to honor these canine heroes and their handlers. Many organizations also use the day to raise awareness about the needs of retired military working dogs, including adoption and healthcare support.

Lake County Sheriff's K9 Dax
On this National K-9 Veterans Day, we reflect on the unwavering dedication and heroism of canine officers who have faithfully served our communities. Among these extraordinary K-9s is the late Lake County Sheriff’s Police K9 Dax, whose legacy of service is an inspiration.
K9 Dax and his handler, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza, shared a remarkable partnership that lasted nearly a decade. Their teamwork not only resulted in the seizure of illegal drugs, firearms, and vehicles but also played a pivotal role in saving over 400 lives. Their contributions exemplify the profound impact of K-9 units in maintaining public safety.
Dax’s service did not go unrecognized. In May of last year, at the Illinois Capitol, State Representative Tom Weber and the Illinois House of Representatives celebrated Dax's outstanding achievements. The duo was honored with the adoption of House Resolution 703, and Deputy Forlenza was present to accept the recognition on their behalf.
“Dax was a hero who put his life on the line to protect our communities,” said Rep. Tom Weber. “His bravery and dedication remind us of the incredible bond between K-9s and their handlers, and the sacrifices they make to keep us safe.”
Sadly, just shy of his 10th birthday, Dax sustained severe injuries to his neck and spine while apprehending a fleeing felon. These injuries marked the end of his service, and on April 12, 2024, the heartbreaking decision was made to let him rest and end his suffering. Dax’s story reminds us of the sacrifices made by K-9 officers and their handlers.
The bond between humans and dogs is one of the oldest and most enduring partnerships in history. Military working dogs exemplify the best qualities of this relationship: loyalty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to their mission. National K-9 Veterans Day is a reminder of the sacrifices made by all who serve, human and canine alike.
