Falling in love with Illinois

Dating back to ancient Rome, some 4,000 years ago, the month of February has symbolized romance and love. While details on how Valentine’s Day ended up on February 14th differ, traditional gift giving, sending valentine cards, and professing one’s undying love have always remained consistent.

While the United States is not typically referred to as a romantic country, it is home to romantic culture and traditions that make the holiday what it is today. Of the fifty states, Illinois ranks high for being one of the most romantic states, placing 6th overall. Illinois did not earn this rank by mistake, as the state is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery and rich history, causing people to fall in love with the sites and cities.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Illinois and the city of Chicago is Navy Pier. The 3,300-foot-long pier on Chicago’s shoreline is a top destination for boat rides, sightseeing, bicycle tours, museums, theaters, restaurants, special events, and more. The destination offers year-round events, with the soonest event being a free fireworks show this Valentine’s Day.

In north-west Illinois, the city named the most beautiful in the state sits Galena. Galena is known for its history, architecture, and outdoor activities. The city is home to Chestnut Mountain Resort, a place to ski and snowboard during the winter, and then a vacation spot with a pool, access to the Mississippi River, and ziplining. The charming city is also where former President Ulysses S. Grant’s home can be found. Beyond the historic architecture and outdoor activities, Galena has a full calendar of events, hosting various fairs and festivals, with this weekend being the Winter Carnival Weekend at the Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa.

In central Illinois, Springfield is one of the most beautiful spots considering its rich history for being home to President Abraham Lincoln and home to our state’s capitol building. Illinois’ Capitol is one of the most popular among other states, known for its 405-foot dome made of stained glass, modeling the Greek Revival architectural style. Also in Springfield, is President Abraham Lincoln’s home. The home has been restored to its 1860s roots, appearing as it did when the Lincoln family lived there. Lincoln’s home is open for guided tours and takes visitors through the life of the successful lawyer, 16th president, father, and husband.

In the southern part of Illinois, the Shawnee National Forest ranks high on the list of most beautiful sites, encompassing 289,000 acres of lush green forests, wetlands, and many hiking trails. The forest is home to one of the most popular sites, the Garden of the Gods, which is a parcel of land within the national forest known for its gorgeous rock formations and views. The Shawnee National Forest is situated between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and covers 11 counties in southern Illinois, making it the largest publicly owned land in Illinois.

In Illinois, tourists and Illinoisans can experience it all. From skiing in the north-west, to enjoying a fresh-water beach in the north-east, to hiking in the south, to visiting a former United States President’s home in the central part, Illinois offers great sites and history for all to fall in love with.
