As Diwali season arrives, Illinois joins millions worldwide in celebrating one of the most cherished and enduring festivals in South Asian Culture. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, has deep historical and spiritual significance, marking a time to honor the triumph of light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and hope over despair. Celebrated over five days, Diwali brings families and communities together through traditions that span centuries.
“Diwali’s message of light over darkness and unity is something we can all connect with,” Rep. La Ha said. “It’s a privilege to witness how communities across Illinois are coming together to celebrate Diwali, embracing a tradition that resonates with so many people’s hopes and dreams.”
Diwali’s roots trace back thousands of years, with legends from Hindu epics like the Ramayana recounting the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after 14 years of exile and victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya, in celebration, are said to have lit rows of oil lamps (diyas), which became a symbol of enlightenment and the victory of good over evil. This practice has transformed over generations, as families light diyas in their homes, create intricate rangoli (floor designs made with colored powders or petals), and gather for prayers that invoke blessings of prosperity and peace.
Across Illinois, Diwali has grown and is celebrated with joy and unity. In Chicago, the city’s Little India along Devon Avenue becomes a colorful spectacle of lights and decorations. Vendors offer traditional sweets and snacks, while local stores display vibrant saris and decor, inviting people of all backgrounds to experience the richness of Diwali traditions.
Aurora’s Diwali celebration features cultural programs filled with Bollywood dance performances, traditional Indian music, and food stalls showcasing the best of Indian cuisine. Local non-profits and small businesses participate, helping to spread cultural awareness and foster community ties.
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) also celebrates Diwali, lighting up the Main Quad and holding festivities that include traditional Indian meals, student-led dance performances, and campus decorations with glowing diyas. Events like these reflect the growing recognition of Diwali within broader American culture and the value of preserving cultural heritage on college campuses.
“Diwali is a time for us to honor diversity and the light we bring to each other’s lives,” Rep. Sanalitro said. “This celebration reminds us of our shared values and strengthens our sense of community.”
As Illinois lights up in celebration of Diwali, communities are reminded of the beauty of shared traditions and the strength that comes from honoring them together. This Festival of Lights, with its brilliant lamps, rich cultural performances, and gathering of families and friends, reflects something timeless: a belief in the power of light, hope, and unity. Diwali is a season that invites all of us to celebrate both our unique heritage and the shared spirit that makes every celebration brighter, warmer, and deeply meaningful.
