Chicago's spooky adventures

The Ghosts of Prairie Avenue, Chicago

Formerly known as the Tonic Room, the Golden Dagger has quite a dark and seedy past which makes it a top haunting hotspot. Tales of human sacrifice and murder continue to swirl with the sight of spirits at the bar and in the basement.

With a history as colorful as the Congress Plaza Hotel you can expect a few ghost stories. Legend has it the elevator often makes unplanned stops on the eighth floor, and there are regular complaints of unexplained whispers and moving objects on the fourth and twelfth floors. However the most storied apparition is that of Al Capone, who frequented the Congress Plaza Hotel during his heyday as a Chicago mobster.

The Drake Hotel, Chicago
Take your chances on the 10th floor, where the “Lady in Red,” a woman who leapt from a window in 1920, has been said to wander the floor.

First Unitarian Church, Alton
The First Unitarian Church was built in 1830 and was first called St. Matthew's Catholic Church. 20 years later, the church burned to the ground. The Unitarian Society purchased the land and rebuilt a church for themselves. Another fire occurred in 1901, burning the church down to its foundation yet again. The church that stands now was rebuilt in 1905. There have been reports of voices and shadowy figures coming from the basement of the church. According to the legend, a school bus full of children was hit by a train after becoming stuck on the tracks, killing everyone . Reportedly, if visitors at Munger Road sprinkle baby powder on their car bumpers and sit on the tracks with their car in neutral, the spirits of the children push the car off the tracks to safety, and their handprints can be seen in the powder. This story got so much traction that it became a movie in 2011.
